Villains on Vacation!

BY JEFF SCHADER

Beyond the reaches of our imagination, where intergalactic portals and magical realms exist, even infamous villains need a break from their nefarious schemes. From Evil Queens & Sea Witches to the Prince of Darkness, everyone needs a vacation every now and then. So the question to ponder is… what do Villains take on vacation?

Thanks to an overactive imagination, the technological power of generative AI artwork, a ridiculous amount of text prompts & regenerations, an obscene amount of hours in Adobe Photoshop fixing & post-processing the artwork, we take a look at the luggage of the Top 10 Villains with “Villains on Vacation.”

Ursula, the Sea Witch

Disney’s The Little Mermaid - When Ursula is not “helping” and relieving those poor unfortunate souls of their pain, she heads down to the Caribbean for warmer waters and a much needed Spa Retreat. She doesn’t exactly pack shampoo or toothpaste in her luggage, so her vacation gear is mostly used to hold breakfast, lunch and dinner while traveling to the Spa. A lady gets hungry…

Once there, she indulges in Aquatic Karaoke Night, participates in the Coral Art Workshop, finds balance & serenity in the Coral Garden Yoga sessions, joins a Spell & Curse Book Club and dines on fabulous local cuisine. The magical facials & beauty treatment are simply divine. We’ve been told that Flotsam & Jetsam love the “all-you-can-eat” buffet. Their favorite dish… Flounder.

Lucifer Morningstar, the Prince of Darkness

DC Comics - So many places to go, so many souls to steal. There’s always Vegas, but he likes a challenge. Mr. Morningstar has what’s known as “working sabbaticals.” Lucifer loves going down (or is that up?) to Georgia. One can only spend so much time in the eternal inferno and dealing with fiery disputes. Once in Georgia he hits a Meditation Retreat where he explores a side of existence that transcends the fiery chaos of Hell. He immerses himself in the human world’s artistic pursuits while attending art galleries and even tries his hand at painting. He gets into the occasional fiddle playing competition. It’s good way to meet his self-imposed quota. Afterall, they don’t all play like Johnny. We’ve heard he even hits a Comedy Club once in awhile. Lots of deals to be made there. Lucifer’s luggage is practical. Since he takes working vacations, his luggage is mostly designed to transport the souls he “acquires” back to Hell and of course his shiny fiddle made of gold.

Maleficent, Mistress of All Evil

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty - Maleficent, the Mistress of All Evil, plans a relaxing getaway from her dark castle and malevolent schemes. In a surprising turn of events, she chooses a vacation destination that aligns with her most renowned skill: sleep. So she packs her bags and heads to an Enchanted Castle Retreat with its towering spires and mystical aura providing the perfect relaxation spot. Once there, she transforms her castle room in a magical slumber chamber. You may not realize this, but being the “Mistress of All Evil is exhausting work. Daily activities include enjoying a Somnolent Spa Day, where magical masseuses use spells to ensure the most relaxing massages. In a nod to her magical prowess, she conducts a Sleep-Inducing Charm Class and to top it all off, heads to the final night’s Slumber Ball, where attendees wear the most comfortable sleepwear. Think magical pajama party.

Thanos, the Mad Titan

Marvel Comics - Following the universe-altering snap that reverberated across cosmic realms, Thanos, the Mad Titan, finds himself at a crossroads. Opting for a respite from his relentless cosmic quest for balance in the universe, let's delve into a whimsical exploration of how Thanos might choose to spend his hard-earned vacation… Thanos relaxes by an "Infinity Pool" (pun intended) on a distant planet. He revels in the tranquility of the cosmic waters, contemplating the balance he has achieved with a snap, while sipping on a cosmic cocktail. In memory of his adopted daughter Gamora, Thanos visits a celestial botanical garden filled with unique flora from across the universe. The vibrant colors symbolize the diverse life he once sought to bring balance to. No one really knows what Thanos brings in those 2 meter large travel chests, but one can assume while on his brief respite, he discovers that true balance involves not just the elimination of half of life but embracing the richness and diversity that the universe has to offer.

Cruella de Vil

Disney’s 101 Dalmatians - When Cruella de Vil take a vacation, it almost always includes shopping and her favorite store can only be found in Paris at the French luxury design house… Fermès. Once she’s rattled the nerves of everyone at Fermès, the fashion-forward villain embarks on a shopping spree like no other. Always making the grand entrance wherever she goes, she navigates through exclusive boutiques, engaging in a couture showdown with the most renowned designers. Armed with her discerning eye and bold opinions, she curates an ensemble that is sure to leave an indelible mark on the fashion scene. In the midst of her shopping spree, Cruella engages in a dramatic interaction with a personal stylist. Opinions clash, outfits are dissected, and in the end, a masterpiece is born as Cruella proves, once again, that she is the ultimate arbiter of style. When traveling Cruella brings a large ensemble of luggage.

Grim Reaper

Mythology - The Grim Reaper, the eternal embodiment of death, decides to take a much-needed vacation from the ceaseless duty of escorting souls to the afterlife. Tired of the constant gloom and doom, the Grim Reaper seeks a short respite from him duties. Opting for a destination that defies the typical image of the afterlife, the Grim Reaper chooses a tropical resort in the underworld. Crystal-clear rivers of souls flow through golden sandbanks, and skeletal palm trees provide a macabre yet charming ambiance. Seeking an adrenaline rush, the Grim Reaper takes up ethereal surfing on the rivers of lost souls. Riding the ghostly waves, the reaper discovers the joy of gliding through the afterlife in a way that transcends his usual somber duties. At night, he’ll attend one of the countless ghostly music festivals where the echoes of haunting melodies fill the air. The Grim Reaper learns that even the afterlife has a rhythm of its own. Dance floors filled with translucent beings become a surreal celebration of existence beyond mortality.

Xenomorph

Alien - Xenomorphs don’t so much “vacation” as they do travel. Their traveling habits are primarily driven by their instinct to survive, propagate, and fulfill their biological imperatives. When full grown, they tend to stow away on spacecraft and have been known to seclude themselves in biomechanical containment units aboard their hosts’ spacecraft. This allows them to hibernate for long periods during spaceflight to gather the strength they need before infesting and building their hives.

Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith

Star Wars - Darth Vader, the imposing Sith Lord of the Galactic Empire on occasion hangs up his lightsaber for a well-deserved vacation. When the Dark Lord travels, he doesn’t travel lightly. Lord Vader usually brings an entourage of Death Troopers, his elite guard unit and his personal CT (Cargo Transport) droids. These droids are multi-functional Imperial droids that provide a variety of tasks, some even make a “mean” cocktail. Since Alderaan is no longer an option for rest and relaxation, Lord Vader has alternative vacation spots. While on Dathomir, he meditates and converses with the Nighsisters, while enjoying long walks among the twisted vegetation to contemplate and meditate. When on the desolate planet Mustafar, the Sith Lord engages in silent meditation surrounded by the echoes of the past. It’s in this seclusion, Vader dedicates time to the study of Sith holocrons. The ancient wisdom contained within these artifacts provides him with insights into the dark side, reinforcing his commitment to the Sith philosophy.

Megatron

The Transformers - Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, decides it's time for a break from the perpetual battle on Earth. Opting for some rest & relaxation on his home planet of Cybertron, Megatron sets out to unwind and recharge. Rather than engaging in the relentless pursuit of energon cubes, Megatron discovers the hidden oasis of the Tranquil Energon Springs. The soothing blue liquid recharges him in a way that no battlefield ever could. Next on the vacation itinerary, is a visit to the Restorative Recharging Stations, where he’ll invest time in the state-of-the-art recharging stations. These specialized pods use advanced technology to optimize his systems, providing a level of rejuvenation that surpasses traditional repair bays. Before heading back to Earth to engage in battle with those traitorous Autobots, he’ll enjoy a Cybertronian Spa day where rejuvenating treatments using rare alloys and energon-infused oils promise relaxation. His luggage, while more like pets to do his bidding, do offer limited storage for bringing back some of the soothing liquids of the Energon Springs. Don’t forget… “Peace through tyranny!”

The Night King

Game of Thrones - The Night King doesn’t actually take vacations, yet when he undertakes his journeys to the Wall, he doesn’t travel lightly. No one can fathom the secrets held within these enigmatic ice chests. If, in an alternate reality, the Night King were to entertain the idea of a vacation, we could envision him selecting a secluded frosty citadel as his retreat. Picture him participating in ice sculpting workshops, skillfully crafting frozen masterpieces that encapsulate the very essence of the North. Amidst this frosty escapade, the imagination conjures up thrilling Direwolf sledding races—a spectacle featuring pitting the Free Folk vs. the White Walkers. The mere thought evokes a vivid tapestry of endless possibilities.
