TheBioBox: A Complete Brand Identity Design Project
Company Name Creation•Logo Design
TheBioBox, is a premier leader in biological banking. Based in California, TheBioBox are trusted internationally for safety, quality, and customer care. Their facility is focused on providing hope for today’s advancements and tomorrow’s health solutions. Owned by DaVinci Biosciences, a mult-project client of The Skins Factory, we were contracted to create the name of the company and design the logo of this revolutionary bio banking service.
So in order to design the logo, the company needed a name. We were tasked to create both. I love product & company naming. Being tasked with naming a company (or product / service) is a thrilling endeavor because it involves capturing the essence, vision, and values of a brand in a single, powerful word or phrase. It's a creative challenge that demands a deep understanding of the company's mission and target demographics, as well as a knack for language and branding. The right name can set the tone for a company's identity, making a lasting impression and evoking the desired emotions and associations. It's a unique opportunity to contribute to the foundation of a brand's legacy, making the process both exhilarating and deeply rewarding. On the flipside there’s a lot of pressure. But there is also excitement in the pressure to figure out the name. If you view our Brand Identity & Logo Design Services page located here, you’ll see the process of what this task entails.
3 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CREATING A NAME:
1. Create a list of Name candidates that perfectly represent the company, their vision & their core services or products. For this project I came up with quite a few viable names. BioBox was my favorite. The Client agreed.
2. Put the names through a trademark search on TESS (U.S. Trademark Electronic Search System) to make sure there are no potential conflicts. This doesn’t mean the company doesn’t need to hire an Intellectual Property Attorney to do a full check, but it’s a solid start to determining whether or not a name has legal validity.
3. Conduct a domain name search. This isn’t as easy as it used to be. A lot of domain names are gone, so you have to get creative. Back in 2012, when I came up with the name BioBox (more on the “The” later) we had no problem with the domain name.
So BioBox was selected by the Client. This was a perfect 6-letter portmanteau for this company and their services. This kicked off the next phase which was designing the logo. The level of effort we apply to logo design projects, is what separates a professional design studio from those cheap logo design freelance sites. You do get what you pay for. Let’s look at the initial round of logo design comps:
ROUND 1: LOGO DESIGN COMPS
ROUND 2: LOGO DESIGN COMPS
We had some strong candidates in the initial round, but the Client requested additional options and variations on a few designs. As a result, we developed a new set of logo candidates for further review:
ROUND 3A: LOGO DESIGN COMPS
In the 3rd round, we merged two of the designs. This resulted in a combined design where the figure merged with a box contained a single cell within it. At this stage, it was still called 'BioBox.' With the design direction set, we then began focusing on color development. Below are some of the colorways and designs we presented for approval. In this round, we also began brainstorming taglines to use.
ROUND 3B: LOGO DESIGN COMPS
ROUND 4: The Final Candidate
So the Client finally selected a final version with one caveat… they wanted to call it “The BioBox” and not just “BioBox.” This presented some difficulty. We loved the balance and symmetry of the 6-character wordmark. Adding in a “The” would throw off the balance, not to mention we had to place it in the wordmark in such a way that it wouldn’t disrupt the visual design. So we ran through the tests. In the end we turned the word sideways as it was the least disruptive way to include it.
So there you have it. The brand identity design of a biotech company from start to finish. This was designed in 2012 and is still in use almost 13 years later, though it has gone through a color change since its original inception. If you need Brand Design, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always here to help. Until next time…
